THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Extreme rainfall is predicted in the capital city for the coming hours on Thursday. Thunderstorms and strong winds with a speed of up to 60 kmph are expected in isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. A red alert has been issued in both Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
Similarly, Kochi is also bracing for heavy rainfall on Thursday. Many trees were uprooted in the city today which led to the district collector declaring a holiday for educational institutions on Friday.
A red alert was issued for Idukki, Ernakulam and Palakkad districts for the next three hours. The Indian Meteorological Department warned of heavy rain with thundershowers and strong winds in the district with a speed of up to 60 kmph. In Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur and Malappuram (Orange Alert: Next three hours only) districts may experience moderate rain with thundershowers and strong winds with a speed of up to 60 kmph. In all other districts, moderate rain and strong winds are a possibility in the coming hours.
A tree fell on a KSRTC bus in Thiruvananthapuram’s Kattakada which led to the bus conductor suffering injuries. Trees were reportedly uprooted due to rain in Kazhakkoottam and Kadakkavoor in the capital city.
It is reported that the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Superfast train was halted in Varkala, the Intercity Express in Murukkumpuzha, the Kanyakumari-Punalur Passenger in Kazhakoottam, the Vanchinad at Kazhakoottam Outer, and the Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam Passenger in Kochuveli for more than an hour.
