Reports against rogue cops hoarded; government faces heat

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is facing criticism for allegedly protecting certain police officers with a history of violent behaviour, commonly referred to as “Idiyans,” by hoarding reports filed by senior officials. Some of these officers have even received promotions.

One such case involves officer Madhu Babu, who, while serving as Circle Inspector in Pathanamthitta, allegedly assaulted an SFI leader. Then SP Harishankar had submitted a report against him, recommending strict action. However, instead of taking action, Madhu Babu was promoted to DySP and posted in Alappuzha. He is currently the state treasurer of the Senior Police Officers’ Association, which is believed to be backing him. The victim of the assault was Jayakrishnan Thannithode, who was then the district president of SFI Pathanamthitta.

Harishankar’s report had specifically stated that Madhu Babu was a habitual offender in custodial torture cases and should not be entrusted with law-and-order responsibilities. Jayakrishnan later wrote on Facebook that his leg was fractured by beating, chili spray was used on his eyes and body, and his eardrum was damaged. Similar allegations have emerged in other cases as well.

Suspension at Peechi soon
In a separate case, disciplinary action is likely against Ratheesh, who was then Sub-Inspector at Peechi police station, in connection with custodial torture. South Zone IG Syamsundar had issued a show-cause notice to him, and action will follow once his reply is received. Sources say suspension is almost certain, as there is clear evidence against him. Further proceedings have also begun against four officers already under suspension for custodial torture at Kunnamkulam police station.
