KOCHI: Teachers are turning their backs on the post of LP and UP headmaster, fearing additional workload, including cleaning. It is said that if teachers become 'HM', they will get two increments and 'additional work'. Even if they work without considering the time, the reward will be just blame.
It is reported that more than 600 teachers eligible for promotion in LP and UP schools in the state have turned down the offer. Most of them are women. A primary teacher said that since there is no cleaning staff, they have to do work, including cleaning toilets. There is no fund for this.
The headmaster will have to do many things in collaboration with local bodies and various government departments. The headmaster is responsible for projects in collaboration with block resource centres, police, excise departments, and for cultural festivals, sports festivals, science fairs, etc. A teacher at a school in Kochi said that he finishes his clerical work after 4 pm. 15 years of teaching experience and passing the qualifying examination are required for the appointment as HM. There is a relaxation for those who are over 50 years of age.
Great menu but no money
HMs have to find money on their own for the midday meal of the children, following the government menu. The government's share is insufficient and has not been paid for two months. It is not always possible to get donations and sponsorship from acquaintances. HM should pay for the repair if the motor or tap in the school breaks down. Along with taking the responsibility of the headmaster, they should also take classes.
''The KER rule requires an office attendant and a cleaning staff in LP and UP schools. It is not followed. Head teachers are under great pressure due to overwork and financial responsibility.
