MALAPPURAM: Two housewives, who are siblings, died of burns in Pothanur in Edappal on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Kalyani (60) and his sister Thangamani (52), natives of Manikyapalam in Pothanur.

Kalyani, who is a widow, lived alone in her house in Manikyapalam. She has no children. Her sister Thangamani, who lived in Vavanur in Koottanad, along with her daughter-in-law, reached the house where Kalyani lived in Manikyapalam on Wednesday. There was a verbal argument between the two and Kalyani poured kerosene and set herself on fire. While trying to rescue her, Thangamani also suffered serious burns.

After suffering burns, both of them were taken to a private hospital in Edappal at around 6 am by the locals. But as the burns were serious, they were shifted to Thrissur Medical College. Both died in the intensive care unit this morning.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.
