THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Human Rights Commission has asked the CBSE to consider implementing the benefit of extra time given to children with type 1 diabetes who are appearing for exams in 10th and 12th standard. The commission's chairman, Justice Alexander Thomas, has directed the CBSE Secretary and the Kerala Regional Director.

The order stated that not allowing them extra time is a violation of the right to equality. The state government has allowed 20 minutes extra time per hour to students in classes 10 and 12 suffering from type 1 diabetes. Recently, this was also applied to vocational higher secondary schools. The proposal is that the same should be implemented in CBSE. Bushra Shihab, an office bearer of the Type One Diabetes Foundation, had filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission. The commission directed Bushra Shihab to submit an application to the CBSE Board Secretary as well.
