
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has wrested the Vizhinjam ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in the local body elections. UDF's K H Sudheer Khan won by 83 votes. He was former councilor of Harbour ward. With this, the number of seats for UDF in the corporation has increased to 20. LDF is in the second place.
This has dealt a blow to the BJP's hopes of securing victory in the Vizhinjam ward and secure an absolute majority in the corporation on its own. It has also dealt a heavy blow to the LDF, which contested to retain the seat. The UDF is regaining the Vizhinjam ward after a long time. The LDF captured the Vizhinjam seat from the Congress in 2015. The UDF is winning in Vizhinjam only now after that.
Voting was held in the Vizhinjam ward yesterday. The counting of votes began at 10 am today. UDF workers celebrated their victory shouting slogans and distributing sweets in front of the counting center. The UDF candidate got 2,902 votes and the LDF got 2,819 votes. The BJP, which was in the third place, got 2,437 votes. The LDF rebel got 118 votes, and this was a blow to the party candidate. The votes received by the rebel turned crucial in the UDF's victory.
