
PALAKKAD: One more has been arrested in the Walayar mob lynching case. Shaji, a native of Attappalam, was the latest to be arrested in the case. Eight people have been arrested so far. Last Wednesday, a mob brutally thrashed Ram Narayan, a native of Chhattisgarh, suspecting him of theft. Ram Narayan, who was in critical condition, died at the Palakkad District Hospital the night after the brutal torture.
The accused were charged under the sections of SC/ST Atrocities Prevention and Mob Murder. Vinod (54) and Jagadish (49), natives of Attapallam, were arrested yesterday. The arrests were made by a special investigation team led by the Crime Branch DYSP. They were arrested after video footage confirmed their presence in the brutal crime. Five people were arrested earlier by the Walayar police in the incident.
Meanwhile, the government announced assistance to the family of the victim. In the cabinet meeting held yesterday, it was decided to provide Rs 30 lakh. The state government announced financial assistance to the family after the incident turned into a major political controversy in Kerala. The Chhattisgarh government also announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Ram Narayan.
