26-year-old woman dies of brain eating infection in capital city; source of disease unclear

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 26-year-old woman, who was undergoing treatment for amoebic encephalitis in Nedumangad, has died. The woman identified as K V Vinaya of Anad died last night. She was undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for the past 40 days.

Vinaya had sought treatment at Nedumangad Hospital two months ago for physical discomfort. When she returned home after recovering from the illness, she developed epilepsy. She was then admitted to the medical college hospital. A blood test conducted later confirmed amoebic encephalitis. Since then, she was on ventilator.

No clarity has been obtained on the source of infection. She had used only the water from the well at home. The water from this well has been sent for testing.
