THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the assembly elections approaching, it is expected that the alliance between the powerful community organisations SNDP Yogam and NSS will be crucial in Kerala politics. The alliance between R Shankar and Mannath Padmanabhan had a great impact on Kerala politics. The political assessment is that the new move is similar.

Although it is the disagreement with V.D. Satheesan that led to the two leaders joining hands, the three fronts are in a quandary as to what the consequences would be if the two organisations came out with the same mindset. This is a development that is pleasing to the LDF in the current political climate. There are indications that the Left Centre has the support for this move.

It is almost clear that the SNDP Yogam leadership is with the LDF. G Sukumaran Nair says that they are on equal footing in political matters. However, both of them turned the spearhead of their attack towards the opposition leader V.D. Satheesan. Satheesan responded in mild language.

SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan met the media in Kanichukulangara and NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair met the media in Perunna. The meeting of SNDP Yogam office bearers and branch secretaries to be held in Alappuzha on the 21st will discuss strengthening their cooperation with NSS.

Vellappally Natesan attacked the League yesterday as well. Sukumaran Nair criticized Union Minister Suresh Gopi in addition to Satheesan. League General Secretary P.M.A. Salam responded that it was a strategy to destroy the atmosphere of peace by tempting and that they would not fall for that trap.

LDF

The Chief Minister allowing the SNDP Yogam general secretary travel in his own vehicle was a major point of criticism. Prominent community organisations coming together after that criticism will bring happiness to the LDF. NSS has also come close to the LDF with the global Ayyappa Sangam. Although it is said to be on an equal footing, it is assessed that indirectly criticising the Congress will be beneficial. The concern is what stance other factions will take.

UDF

Sukumaran Nair had criticised Satheesan for attending the synod meeting after declaring that he would not try to please any communities. The question of what authority Satheesan has to take policy decisions is a big one. Congress is losing sleep when reading this along with Vellappally's words that Satheesan said something that Chennithala, Venugopal or A.K. Antony did not say about him.

BJP silent

The BJP leadership has not responded. Sukumaran Nair's statement targeting Suresh Gopi that NSS cannot be captured like Thrissur was clearly a reflection of the position. He also said that the BJP leader did not like the union of Yogam and NSS.

''V.D. Satheesan is a plant that bloomed yesterday. Nair-Ezhava unity is essential. We are not here to take advantage of other communities

-Vellapalli Natesan

''Untamed Satheesan will be a setback for the Congress in the elections. S.N.D.P.Yogam-NSS unity is the need of the hour

-G. Sukumaran Nair

''The position is that there should be no rift between communities. Anyone can criticize me personally. If there is a mistake, I will correct myself. I will express my difference of opinion to the community leaders.

-V.D. Satheesan
