Kollam native Isaac George’s magnanimous deed to donate his organs posthumously has now given new life to six people in Kerala. Issac, aged 28, was declared brain dead the other day while undergoing treatment following his injuries suffered in a fatal road accident.
Dr. Jo Joseph of Lisie Hospital has shared an emotional note on the subject on Facebook.
“I was in a hurry yesterday. I left Ernakulam at 2 am and reached KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at 6:30 am. I left the hospital at 12 pm with Issac’s heart to the airport in just seven minutes. I reached Ernakulam from Thiruvananthapuram in just 45 minutes by helicopter. It took only five minutes for me to reach Lisie Hospital from the helipad of the Hyatt Hotel. It was indeed a busy day for me.
It was also the day I felt the happiest as a human being. More than being a doctor, I felt proud of my government and strengthened my faith in my system.
When I saw Isaac George in the operating theatre at KIMS, my heart trembled. Issac looked perfectly fine with no serious injuries on the outside. However, his brain was completely paralysed in the accident. At an age when he was chasing his dreams of entrepreneurship, tragedy came knocking on the doors in the form of an accident. Words are not enough to thank Isaac's family for the great kindness shown by donating the organs despite suffering a heartbreak.
When I was operating on the heart, two kidneys, and the liver, my mind was reeling. Even while facing the biggest tragedy of their lives, the family felt the need to uphold what Isaac George believed in. Can humans do any better than this?
Therefore, I held the box containing the heart close to my body with respect throughout the journey.”
