THODUPUZHA: A man who duped many people and extorted lakhs by pretending to be a cancer patient was arrested. Karimannur native CB Biju (45) was arrested. He first messaged in a WhatsApp group of his college classmates stating that he was sick. Then Biju himself called the group members by changing his voice and introducing himself as Biju’s uncle. He did this using a voice changing mobile application. Then the classmates collected around ten and a half lakh rupees and gave it to him.

Then Biju called the teachers in a female voice by introducing as his sister and asked for help. They also gave money. Police say that he has extorted Rs 15 lakh. He also forged the medical records of a hospital in Tamil Nadu and posted them in a WhatsApp group. He also sought help for further treatment. The group members then asked his uncle to come on video call. At night, Biju attended the video call with his head covered. This made the group members suspicious. Then when they called 'uncle's' number, they got a reply that Biju had died.

Meanwhile, one of the classmates met Biju in Thodupuzha the other day. He also understood that Biju bought a new car. That's when they realized they became victims of fraud. Then fifty people signed and lodged a complaint at Thodupuzha police station. He was arrested under a team led by DYSP MR Madhu Babu. He is a native of Cherthala and came to Mulappuram after marriage. He has two Aadhaar cards, one with Mulappuram address and the other in Alappuzha address. Biju Chellappan is his name on the Aadhaar card of Alappuzha.
