Oscar winning Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamato dies

TOKYO: Ryuichi Sakamato, a world renowned Japanese musician and record producer has died on March 23. He was 71-years old and was undergoing treatment for cancer. His demise was announced through his website.

Sakanato gained world-wide attention by doing new experiments in electronics music. He had also bagged Grammy, BAFTA and Oscar award for his music. He was also an actor and has starred in the film ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ with David Bowie.

He received Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe in the ‘Best Original Score’ category for the hit film ‘The Last Emperor’ released in 1987. He also acted in the film. ‘The Last Emperor’ directed by Bernardo Bertolucci had bagged nine Oscar awards. In 1978, he formed the electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. He also composed background music for several films including ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Little Buddha’.
