Acquired wealth above income; CBI court sentences ex-Deputy Commissioner of Customs and his family to jail and fine

KOCHI: CBI special court sentenced ex-deputy commissioner of customs and his family to prison and fine in the case of amassing wealth beyond income. PR Vijayan (73), a native of Iringalakuda who retired as Deputy Commissioner of Kozhikode Customs, his wife and three children were sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2.50 crore. In the CBI investigation, additional property worth Rs 78.90 lakh has been found under the ownership of PR Vijayan and his family.

The property found in the investigation was in the name of his wife and three daughters, due to which they were also punished. A case was registered against them on charges of conspiracy. Special Judge KK Balakrishnan of Kochi CBI Court pronounced the sentence. The CBI investigation has found records of Vijayan's son-in-law sending Rs 50 lakh to his wife and relatives, but the court said further action on this will not affect the verdict of the case.
