NEW DELHI: Franco Mulakkal, the archbishop who courted controversy for alleged sexual assault on nuns resigned from his position as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar. Franco in segue post his resignation released a video testimony saying it was his solicited move to resign from the position. The supreme pontiff Pope in the Vatican too has accepted Franco's resignation.
Franco will henceforth be known as Franco bishop emeritus. The Vatican spokesperson of India admitted Franco’s resignation as a pragmatic step but not anything of punitive shade. The bishop was arrested by police in 2018 for charges of rape. Big outpour sprouted all across Kerala against the hidden torture inflicted upon nuns in cathedrals. However, the Kottayam sessions court later acquitted Franco of all charges of rape giving him more reigns of power.
