Two passengers held at Kannur airport for smuggling gold by hiding it inside socks

KANNUR: Gold worth Rs 1.10 crore was seized from two passengers of the Air India Express flight from Dubai. The incident took place at the Kannur airport. 1797 grams of gold was seized from Kasaragod resident Mohammad Altaf and Payyannur native Mohammad Basheer.

They landed in Kannur on Wednesday morning. An attempt was made to smuggle gold in paste form by hiding it inside socks. Suspicious of their behaviour, the DRI and Customs conducted an inspection and found 1157 grams of gold worth around Rs 71 lakh from Mohammad Altaf. 640 grams of gold worth Rs 39 lakh was seized from Mohammad Basheer.

Last month, 1199 grams of gold worth Rs 73 lakh was seized from Ajmal Sunaif, a resident of Kasaragod, who had arrived from Abu Dhabi at the Kannur airport.
