KOTTAYAM: Education Minister V Sivankutty said that District Collectors should adopt the practice of notifying schools of holidays the day before in the event of rain. The minister said that children will find it difficult if the holiday is announced in the morning. The minister was speaking to the media in Kottayam.

The minister pointed out that trees posing danger in educational institutions have been cut down as part of precautionary measures. The minister gave the explanation in the wake of the incident in which a girl died after a tree fell on top of her at school in Kasargod. "The tree that fell yesterday was not among those posing danger to the school. The government will provide all possible assistance to the family," the minister said.

"The issue of the children in Malabar should not be made a political issue. The government has taken action to find a solution to the problem.14 batches have been shifted to Malabar. There are indeed some issues. However, there is no need to stage a protest by taking this up as a political issue," he added.
