More accidents taking place in Kochi, more deaths in capital city; most victims belong to 18-25 age group

KOCHI: A recent report is claiming that two-wheelers are involved in almost half of the road accidents taking place in the state. Most of those hurt or killed in accidents are between the ages of 18 and 25. While accidents are more in Ernakulam district, deaths are more in Thiruvananthapuram. This is indicated in the report prepared by the Statistics Department regarding road accidents from 2018 to 2022.

8,154 people aged between 18 and 25 were victims of the total accidents. 76,734 two-wheeler accidents took place during this period. 7,733 people died. Two-wheelers accounted for 41.18 percent of the total accidents. 39.72 percent of the dead were two-wheeler passengers. Accidents, involving cars came second. Out of 53,519 car accidents, 4,180 people died. Most accidents occurred in the months of December and January. Christmas, New Year celebrations and the winter season are considered to be the reason for the high number of accidents during this period. The report was prepared as part of the National Statistics Day celebrations.
