THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Kerala is likely to receive rainfall for the next five days. A yellow alert has been issued in several districts. For January 9, a yellow alert has been declared in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, warning of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. Heavy rain is defined as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
Fishermen advisory
The IMD has said that there is no restriction on fishing along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts today (January 5, 2026).
Special warning
From January 5 to January 9, 2026, strong winds with speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, and gusts reaching up to 55 kmph at times, are likely over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, the Kanyakumari region, the southwest Bay of Bengal, and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in these areas during this period.
Meanwhile, heat conditions are intensifying across the state. Due to the scorching daytime temperatures, wells, streams, and ponds are drying up, leading to drinking water shortages in several districts. The situation is more severe in hilly areas.
