KANNUR: Crores extorted after offering online part time jobs. The incident happened in Kannur. Many lose an amount of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. The cyber police said they suspect people from North India behind the fraud. A woman who was cheated in the same way committed suicide by jumping into the sea due to debt, last month.
A youth from Kannur first received a message on his WhatsApp offering an online part time job. When he said ‘yes’, they asked him to like the YouTube channel. They promised Rs 50 if sent the screenshot of liking the channel. Money was transferred to his account. They later promised the youth to get Rs 15,000 if given Rs 10,000. Following this, the youth had trust in the group. He was later added to the Telegram Group saying to include him along with the members making huge profits. They accepted money saying it was crypto currency transaction.
Demanded to pay tax for dividend. Realized that it was a scam after losing Rs 30 lakhs in two weeks. The money given was a loan taken from the bank. They extorted money from many including central government officials to housewives. The cyber police received eight complaints yesterday alone. Hundreds of people have been scammed, but many were unwilling to file a complaint. The police have come to the conclusion that a gang based in North India is behind the fraud.
