High levels of pesticides found in various brands of rice flour; two institutions shut down

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In order to ensure the quality and safety of rice powder distributed during Onam, food safety department conducted an inspection of rice powder manufacturing units across the state. The inspection was conducted in units that manufactured rice powder, puttu powder, appam and idiyappam powder. Rice powder is one of the most sold products in the market during Onam. State-wide tests were carried out on the basis of findings by food testing laboratories that some brands of rice flour were found to contain higher levels of pesticide residues.

The inspection was conducted by 68 squads across the state. 199 inspections were conducted. Action was taken to stop the operation of two establishments operating without a license in the Kollam and Kottayam districts. Three firms found to have serious violations were issued penalty notices. Rectification notices were also issued to nine institutions. 104 statistical and 75 surveillance samples were collected and sent to labs for testing. The inspection found that many establishments were not maintaining adequate cleanliness.

A directive was issued to seize rice flour produced outside of food safety norms. Minister Veena George informed that further inspections will be conducted and legal action will be taken against those who violate the law.
