Government institutions face fine up to Rs 50,000 for inadequate waste management

waste-

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Local Government Department has initiated action to impose fines of up to Rs 50,000 on all government and private institutions that fail to properly manage waste in accordance with the Municipal Act. Institutional leaders can also be fined. Actions will be taken following the inspection and recording of footage by the district-level enforcement team of the local department. Just yesterday, the Superintendent of Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital was fined Rs 10,000.

Stringent measures have been taken due to improper waste disposal especially in government offices frequently visited by people. It has been directed that collaboration with local institutions is essential to enhance waste management and to hand over organic waste to the Green Karma Sena. Therefore, there will be no more warnings.

Special attention has been given to cleaning in hospitals and any shortcomings will be promptly identified and penalized. While medical waste is properly managed through IMA's 'image,' the issue primarily lies in the management of other types of waste. In private hospitals, this problem is not as prominent.

Key points to ensure

Do not dispose of food waste in offices and hospitals.

Food waste should be disposed of on a daily basis.

Ensure that waste pipes in toilets and canteens are in good condition.

Clean toilets regularly throughout the day.

Ensure water tanks are kept clean.

There is no distinction between public and government offices in terms of waste management. There will be no leniency for those found in violation.
