NEW DELHI: India's abstention from voting on a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, including Congress and the Left. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi expressed her dismay through social media, describing India's stance at the UN as shocking and embarrassing. She stated that India, a nation founded on the principles of non-violence and truth, should have taken a stand in support of the people of Gaza who are deprived of essentials like water, food, and medicine.

In response to Priyanka's criticism, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi defended India's position, emphasizing that those who are ashamed or shocked should understand that India will never align itself with terrorism.

CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary D. Raja also weighed in on the matter. Additionally, NCP President Sharad Pawar criticized the central government, claiming that it appears to be confused on the issue of Palestine. He noted that previous governments had not encountered such a crisis, and India's long-standing policy had been to support Palestine.

India's abstention from the UN resolution, which called for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, has sparked a broader debate regarding the country's stance on international issues and its approach to conflicts in the Middle East.
