
HYDERABAD: Writing a new political chapter in Telangana, CPI's M. Ganesh took oath as the Mayor of Kothagudem Corporation. This was the first election held after Kothagudem was elevated to a corporation. Ganesh also holds the history of being the first mayor of the new corporation. S. Lalitha Kumari of the Congress is the deputy mayor.
The CPI and Congress, which contested alone, won 22 seats each in the 60-division corporation. As per the agreement reached following discussions between the state leaders of both parties, the CPI will hold the post of mayor for two and a half years. The Congress will hold the post of deputy mayor for the same period. This is the first time that the CPI is ruling a corporation in Telangana. The CPI leadership says that this achievement will be a new beginning. Mayor Ganesh is a leader with a tribal background. CPI National Secretary Palla Venkata Reddy thanked the Congress leadership for supporting the party in the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation mayoral election.
There are seven corporations in Telangana. Of these, only Karimnagar is ruled by the BJP. Congress mayors have come to power in five corporations.
