Customs sleuths seize gold worth Rs 1.5 cr in Karipur airport, woman smuggles gold weighing over 1 kg

KOZHIKODE: Gold worth Rs 1.5 crore was seized in Karipur airport. Four people, including a woman, were taken into custody by Customs. The said persons were identified as Kakkuzhiyil Purayil Shamna from Kozhikode, Zainul Abid from Kannamangalam, Riyaz from Vythiri and Abdul Shahad from Karnataka.

2.3 kg of gold was seized during the inspection carried out by Customs last night and this morning based on confidential information. Shamna came from Dubai. 1.160 kilograms of gold was seized from the woman alone.

The woman smuggled gold by hiding it in four capsules on her body. Riyaz also came from Dubai. 331 grams of gold were found hidden in the elastic of underwear and jeans seized from him.

Abdul Shahad smuggled gold in the form of kitchen knife. 579 grams were seized from him. 282 grams of gold was seized from Zainul Abid.

Meanwhile, around 1.5 kg of gold worth over Rs 81 lakh was seized from a passenger at the Kochi International Airport. Kaja Hussain, a native of Palakkad, was caught by Customs in connection with the incident. The accused reached Kochi from Muscat yesterday afternoon by Oman Airways. The gold was hidden inside the baggage under the guise of rechargeable light batteries. There were 15 rectangular gold plates. He was caught following a tip-off received by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Kozhikode.
