US approves first vaccine against chikungunya virus

WASHINGTON: The US has approved the world’s first vaccine for chikungunya, a virus spread by mosquitoes. The vaccine developed by Europe’s Valneva will be marketed under the name 'Ixchiq'. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).

The vaccine will be administered to those above 18. It should be taken once. Reports said the vaccine will soon reach countries where the virus is spreading. The viral fever called chikungunya, which is a threat in many parts of the world, broke out in Kerala in 2007. This usually occurs during the rainy season. Diseases are caused by viruses belonging to the Arbo family. Aedes mosquitoes carry the disease.

Symptoms are likely to appear within two to 12 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. Most people start showing symptoms within seven days. High fever is the main symptom. Although similar to dengue and viral fever, chikungunya has some differences. Along with fever, there is swelling and pain in the joints. Some may also experience fatigue and nausea. Arthritis and swelling can persist for months or years, even if cured. Even death can occur in those with other diseases. Treatment should be started as soon as symptoms appear.
