Private practice of doctors in crisis; Restriction to look prospective admits at home

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health professionals, including surgeons and anesthesiologists, express concern over a new directive from the health department. The directive prohibits treating patients likely to require hospitalization during doctors' private practice sessions.

The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) and the Kerala Government Specialist Doctors Association (KGSDA) have filed complaints against this decision. They argue that the proposal to mandate a residential certificate for home examinations is impractical especially for residents in flats who cannot conduct practices there.

Dr T. N. Suresh, State President of KGMOA highlighted the challenges faced by elderly doctors who moved their practices outside after the COVID-19 pandemic. They demand a withdrawal of the decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the option of private practice, which is currently legal.

Dr. Sunjit Ravi, State spokesperson for KGSDA, stated that the restriction on private practice would primarily benefit private hospitals. Both associations stress that their intention is not to inconvenience hospital patients but rather to address the impractical aspects of the proposal.

Despite existing norms restricting doctors from practicing in commercial buildings and adjacent to medical facilities, the medical community believes that completely halting private practice is an incorrect approach. They advocate for measures that preserve the legitimacy of private practice without compromising patient care.

The doctors assert that safeguarding patient interests while allowing for legal and practical private practice is paramount. They urge the health department to reconsider its decision in light of the evolving circumstances.
