KOLLAM: Kerala Women's Commission Chairperson Adv P Sathidevi has revealed that the highest number of dowry harassment cases in the state are registered in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. Sathidevi was inaugurating a seminar in Kollam.
She also criticized the parents for not even trying to understand if the girls were suffering any difficulties in their husbands' homes. Sathidevi added that the society looks at girls as a liability. She also lashed out at parents who brag about paying high dowries to their children.
"Even today, we can see some parents saying that I've married my daughter to this family and gave this much gold as a dowry. Keeping this background in mind, the Women's Commission will recommend to the state government to set a cap on gifts and impose a tax on lavish weddings. Dowry cannot be banned by law alone. Each one of us should take a decision against this social menace," Sathidevi said.
