KANNUR: In 1998, KPCC President K Sudhakaran demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for his arrest in the attempted murder of E P Jayarajan.

Thalassery Additional Sub Court dismissed the defamation case for the non-payment of Rs 3.43 lakh in the Rs 50 lakh defamation case. The defamation case was filed because the arrest was deemed unfair. Along with this, a bankruptcy petition was filed in the court earlier showing that there is no way to deposit 3.43 lakh rupees. The court accepted the bankruptcy petition after the then-UDF government took a favourable stand.

But last year, during the trial of the defamation case, the state government informed the court that Sudhakaran has assets of more than one crore rupees and is getting an MP salary as well. Then the court ruled that Sudhakaran was not bankrupt. The court also ordered to deposit of Rs 3.43 lakh within 15 days. Sudhakaran was not ready for this and the defamation case was dismissed.
