NEW DELHI: Renowned painter and Padma Bhushan winner A Ramachandran (89) passed away on Saturday. Ramachandran breathed his last at around 9 am on Saturday in Delhi, said his son Rahul.
Ramachandran was born in Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram district. In 1961, he obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts from Santiniketan, Bengal. Then he studied the art of mural painting in Kerala. He was the head of the art department at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.
Yayati, Urvashi, and Nuclear Ragini are a few of the most renowned works that were born under the strokes of Ramachandran. He preferred oil painting and water painting than any other mode of painting. Every painting of Ramachandran had a closeness with mythology. In 2005, the country honoured him with Padma Bhushan. In 2002, he was selected as a Fellow of Lalitha Kala Academy.
Ramachandran was well-versed in the writings of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, Saadat Hasan Manto, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and always tried to imbue their literary prowess into his work.
