Heatwave warning in Kerala, temp to rise by 4°C; yellow alert issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-temperature warning has been issued in four districts in the state on Saturday. The Central Meteorological Center has informed that the heat will increase in Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts on Saturday. The State Disaster Management Authority has also issued cautionary instructions to the public.

The situation is most severe in Kannur district. It is estimated that the temperature will rise to 38 degrees Celsius. Temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius in Kottayam district and 36 degrees Celsius in both Alappuzha and Kozhikode districts. According to the warning, the temperature may rise to four degrees Celsius above the normal range during the next week.

Preventive measures have also been advised for the public to follow suit.

  • Avoid direct exposure to direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm
  • Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty
  • Alcohol, tea, coffee and soft drinks should be avoided
  • Use light-coloured cotton clothes
  • Footwear must be used
