Indian journalist Fazil Khan dies in New York building fire accident

NEW DELHI: An Indian journalist was killed in a fire accident that took place in his New York residence. The fire broke out at the St. Nicholas Apartments in Harlem, New York. The Indian Embassy confirmed that Fazil Khan (27) was killed in the accident. Officials also stated that they have started the process to bring the dead body to India.

A graduate of Columbia Journalism School, Fazil Khan was working as a data journalist at Hechinger Report. It is an institution based at Teachers College, Columbia University. Fazil Khan started his career in Business Standard in 2018. Before going to graduate school at Columbia University in 2020, he also worked as a correspondent for CNN-News 18 in Delhi.

New York media reports it was the lithium-ion battery mostly seen in e-bikes that caused the fire tragedy. After the fire, Fazil was rushed to the hospital but died during treatment. 17 people suffered serious burns in the accident. The fire broke out on the top floor of the apartment. Some people jumped out of the windows and escaped the tragedy.
