AIIMS still a dream for Kerala, state expects PM to announce today

f

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even though the central government announced AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) for Kerala in 2014, it exists only on paper. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated AIIMS facilities in Bhatinda (Punjab), Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh), Kalyani (West Bengal), Mangalgiri (Andhra Pradesh) and Rajkot (Gujarat) yesterday. All these were announced after Kerala.

The state government awaits the acquisition of 252 acres of land in Kinalur, Kozhikode. MPs from Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Ernakulam and Palakkad are advocating for AIIMS. Health Minister Veena George confirmed its location in Kinalur. However, the Center claims a lack of coordination regarding space. Eight months ago, the Union Health Secretary assured that the file had been approved by the Union Cabinet, based on the Finance Ministry's recommendation, with a decision expected within two weeks.

In 2014, the central promise required 200 acres of land with road facilities and drinking water for AIIMS. The UDF government identified sites in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Kozhikode. However, in 2018, the Center changed its stance stating the project was not under consideration. A ministerial delegation led by the Chief Minister lobbied in Delhi but to no avail.

The Union Health Ministry recommended granting AIIMS to Kerala to the Finance Ministry in April 2022, yet no further action was taken. Notably, AIIMS in Tamil Nadu, announced after Kerala's proposal is under construction in Madurai.

AIIMS in Andhra Pradesh, costing Rs 1618.23 crore has commenced operations with 960 beds, 41 sections, 13 specialties and 125 MBBS seats spread across 183.11 acres.

"Kerala's demand is just. AIIMS should be sanctioned without further delay. Kerala meets all the requirements."

-- Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister
