KOLLAM: Kerala is in a state of unrest due to cyber frauds that are rampant. Recently, Rs 40 lakh was stolen from a native of Kollam. Those who fail to recognize whether the messages coming on the phone are fake or not, lose money. Meanwhile, the police say that complaints of extortion through loan apps are decreasing.
Extortion by sending fake parcels and threats through fake social media accounts, online job fraud, fraud through mobile links etc. are mostly reported in the district.
Fraudsters gain victims' trust through fake advertisements on social media. These ads will include the link along with a credible message. Once the link is opened, the fraudsters will get their personal information. Small amounts will be awarded as profit in the first transactions. Then they cheat by making transactions of huge amounts. Scams are also being carried out by offering crypto-currency with double value by paying a small amount of money. Fake advertisements are also being made in the name of prominent companies. Telegram is widely used for this purpose.
