THRISSUR: Today is the 80th birthday of P. Jayachandran, the melodious voice of South Indian film music. Born on March 3, 1944 in the Thiruvathira Nakshatra of Kumba month, he was the third of five children of Rama Varma Kochaniyan Thampuran, a member of the Kochi royal family, and Paliath Subhadra Kunjamma.
He has sung more than 15,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi languages. Jayachandran's song is still youthful even today despite the discomforts of age.
Fans are preparing Ashiti Pranaam today with his 80 songs at Sahitya Akademi at 9:30 am. Jayettan@80 Bhava Geetham by Geetam Sangeetha Kalsamskarika Vedi. Pradeep Somasundaran, Edapal Viswanathan and others will perform music. Music directors Ouseppachan, Vidyadharan Master, Mohan Sithara, poet Alankode Leelakrishnan and others will attend.
Star of the first youth festival
In the first State School Youth Festival in 1958, P. Jayachandran of Irinjalakuda National School stood first in mridangam and second in light music. KJ Yesudas was the one who stood first in both light music and classical music.
After getting his degree in 1965, he came to Madras for work. Jayachandran's breakthrough came when he replaced Yesudas and sang 'Chotta Muthal Chudala Vare' from 'Pazhassi Raja' at MB Srinivasan's ganamela for India-Pak War Fund. He got an invitation to sing in Chandratara's movie 'Kunjalimaraikkar', the song was 'Oru Mullappoomaalayumaay'.
On the suggestion of A Vincent, G Devarajan gave him the song 'Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi' for the film 'Kalithothorhan'. With that, Jayachandran made his mark in the Malayali mind. His residence is Poonkunnam, Thrissur. Wife: Lalitha. His children Lakshmi and Dinanath are singers.
