NEW DELHI: Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar have been appointed as the new Election Commissioners. The President's order regarding the appointment of both has been issued.
The two were selected by a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, a member of the committee and leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, expressed his disagreement with this matter.
He stated that the names of those who were on the shortlist were not informed in advance, and he had sent a letter to the Law Minister requesting this. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also a member of the committee.
Gyanesh Kumar is a Kerala Cadre Civil Service Officer, and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu is a Punjab Cadre Civil Service Officer. Election Commissioner Arun Goyal recently resigned.
Another commissioner, Anoop Chandra Pandey, recently retired. Members have now been selected to fill those vacancies.
