ISRO successfully tests reusable Pushpak rocket, paving way for cost-effective space exploration

India's achievements in space are eagerly watched by third world countries, holding hope for cost-effective satellite launches. Once dominated by developed nations like the US, Russia and China, space research now sees India making significant strides in the past decade. The upcoming historic mission with Indian astronauts adds to this momentum. Notably, ISRO's recent success with the third test of the reusable Pushpak rocket marks a milestone.

The Pushpak rockets, akin to airplanes, are reusable and can land back on the runway post-space missions, modeled after America's space shuttle. The first test was in 2016, followed by a second in April 2023. This recent test showcased a deviation of 150 meters from the intended straight-line landing, yet the descent was self-controlled, as stated by VSSC Director Dr S Unnikrishnan Nair.

Conducted at DRDO's Aeronautical Test Range near Chitradurga in Karnataka, the test involved lifting Pushpak with an Air Force Chinook helicopter, separating it at 4.5 km altitude, after which the rocket maneuvered itself and safely landed like an airplane. Pending is the experiment of space travel and re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, crucial for future launches.

Pushpak's significance lies in supporting India's manned space mission Gaganyaan and space station projects. Currently, only a few nations possess such rockets. India's achievement not only promises reduced satellite launch costs but also opens avenues for satellite launches for third world countries at minimal expenses. Future iterations could even explore space tourism. ISRO's success with the Pushpak experiment stands as a proud moment for India globally.
