THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The sea turtle that came to lay eggs on the shore of Shanghumugham seem interesting for the people. The sea turtle that came ashore the other day laid 81 eggs. The eggs were moved to a specially prepared pit near the Kalmandapam under the leadership of environmentalists. A board prohibiting entry was also installed around it.
The sea turtle of the olive ridley species came to lay its eggs on the Shanghumugham coast on Sunday night. Ajith, an environmental activist and field officer of the Wildlife Trust of India, reached the spot and provided facilities for the turtle to lay its eggs. Sea turtles, who travel for miles to breed, come ashore at night and make a big pit to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch and the baby turtles go to the sea.
The time for hatching eggs is 42 days. Among the eight species of sea turtles, the olive ridley species is the most common on the Kerala coast. Sea turtles play a key role in sustaining fish stocks by eating jellyfish that eat fish eggs in the ocean, harmful fish and fungi that cause the destruction of fish stocks.
