Shattered over bank's property attachment; Woman who set self on fire dies in Idukki

NEDUMKANDAM: A woman who tried to commit suicide in heartbreak over her house getting attached by the bank, died on Saturday. The deceased was Sheeba Dileep (49), a native of Asarikandam, Nedunkandam, Idukki. Sheeba suffered 80 per cent burns and was undergoing treatment at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital. During the bank procedure on Friday, Sheeba poured petrol over her body and set herself on fire.

The SI and the woman police officer who tried to save Sheeba also suffered burns in the incident. Grade SI Benoy Abraham (52) and female civil officer Ambili (35) sustained burns. Ambili, who suffered 40 per cent burns, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ernakulam.

The suicide attempt was made at 2:30 on Friday. Following the judgment of the Thodupuzha CJM court, the private bank employees accompanied by the police came to confiscate Sheeba's house and land. After this, Sheeba set herself on fire by pouring petrol that was stored at home.

The previous owner had taken a loan by mortgaging 13 cents of land where Sheeba and her family now lived. Sheeba bought this land from the previous owner in agreement to pay Rs 15 lakh out of this. It is reported that the bank officials approached the court and obtained a foreclosure order while the settlement efforts were ongoing.
