MANNAR: In a shocking incident, a man barged into a house and hacked five members of a family, including the widow who refused to marry him. The incident took place at Karazhma in Chennithala. The police have arrested Karazhma native Ranjith Rajendran, an electrician, in the incident. Karazhma native Raashuddin (58), his wife Nirmala (55), son Sujith (33), daughter Sajina (24) and Raashuddin's brother-in-law Binu (47) were attacked by Ranjith. The injured persons are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The incident took place at around 10 pm on Friday. Raashuddin's daughter Sajina, who works as a nurse in Kuwait, is a widow. Following the death of Sajina's husband, Ranjith had approached her family expressing his willingness to marry her. However, Sajina refused to marry him after learning about his bad habits. Ranjith's grudge over this led to the attack.

Sajina returned to Kerala only on Friday. After learning about her arrival, the accused went to Sajina's house with a machete and attacked her. Sajina was standing in front of the house when Ranjtih ambushed her from the dark and hacked her with the machete. He also hacked Sajina's brother Sujith who came after hearing her screams. When Raashuddin and Binu grabbed the machete from his hand, Ranjith took a paper cutter from his pocket and hacked them both. He also severely hacked Nirmala who attempted to stop him. Following this, the locals gathered at the house and apprehended the accused. They then handed him over to the police. Raashuddin and Sajina, who were critically injured, were rushed to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Nirmala, Sujith and Binu are undergoing treatment at the Mavelikkara District Hospital.

Ranjith was arrested by the police team comprising Mannar Police Inspector B Rajendran Pillai, SI Siddique, Grade SI Vijayakumar, CPO Hariprasad and Home Guard Rajesh. The accused was later produced in the court and remanded.
