THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Radiation treatment at the Regional Cancer Center (RCC), which was interrupted due to a cyber attack from abroad, resumed in the morning but was interrupted in the afternoon. This is due to a software hang and a fix is ongoing.

The radiation treatment, which was interrupted for a week, resumed at 8 am after software auditing, firewall and anti-virus defence systems were set up to prevent future cyber attacks. The radiation treatment had to be stopped after the software hung at 12 noon. Software companies GE and Variant and the IT department at RCC tried to resolve the issue but could not.

Last Monday, there was a cyber attack on 14 servers of RCC. This was first reported by 'Kerala Kaumudi'. The treatment was halted when the servers where the radiation software was uploaded were attacked. The Cyber Police and IT Department's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-K) recovered the medical data of more than 20 lakh people through emergency measures.

The follow-up treatment of 3500 patients was interrupted due to the one-week radiation shutdown. All the evidence of the cyber attack has been collected by performing a log analysis of computers. An FIR will be registered against the hackers after receiving the cyber forensic report.
