Bad sarees distributed to secure votes; protests by throwing sarees at leader's house

VIJAYAWADA: Sarees distributed to women voters were thrown at local leader's house in protest. The protest happened because the sarees were bad. Voters took to the streets in many places to protest against being cheated by promises of money for voting. As the video of all this went viral, it became proof that money and gifts were distributed.

Sarees distributed to vote for the YSRCP candidate in the Kothapeta constituency of East Godavari district were thrown by a group of women at the home of a local leader. Sitting MLA Chirla Jaggireddy is the YSRCP candidate here. It is also not clear if it was the opposing candidates who deliberately made the women to protest. Sarees were distributed on the 11th.

In the coastal district of Palnadu, footage emerged of women lashing out at a leader in anger over the non-payment of money promised for voting. The women's question was, "We didn't get the money that was promised, aren't you ashamed to come in front of us?"

Voters also protested in front of the YSRCP office in Pithapuram, where JSP's Pawan Kalyan and YSRCP's Geetha are contesting. They were angered by the fact that the promised Rs 3,000 per person was given to only a few. The leaders who were entrusted with the distribution of bribes went into hiding. Police registered a case.

The Election Commission had seized 5,472 sarees worth Rs 33.6 lakh bearing the label of the ruling YSRCP from Palnad district on Thursday.

It is customary here to pay money for votes and make voters promise on whom they will vote for. The Election Commission has seized Rs 176 crore, jewelery and drugs since January 1.
