PYONGYANG: In North Korea, a country known for its stringent restrictions across various domains, the government enforces robust measures against non-compliance with the law, imposing penalties and fines. Recently, President Kim Jong Un implemented a ban on several global fashion and cosmetic brands within the country. The regime has now extended its prohibition to red-coloured lipstick.
The ban on red lipstick stems from its perceived association with capitalism. In North Korea, heavy makeup including red lipstick is prohibited for women as it is considered overly ostentatious. Furthermore, the regime has imposed restrictions on skinny and blue jeans, body-hugging attire and certain hairstyles. Only hairstyles approved by the government are permitted with severe consequences for unauthorized styles and hairstylists who defy regulations.
Stringent measures are also in place to deter individuals from wearing banned items such as skinny jeans with punishment ranging from fines to public humiliation.
