NEW DELHI: Yemen decided to carry out the death penalty of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya on the 16th of July. The Indian embassy confirmed getting the news from the prison authorities in Sanaa.
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Yemen has forwarded the order to the prison authorities. The Indian Embassy has also confirmed this.
In 2017, a trial court sentenced Nimisha Priya to death for the murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdu Mahdi. The only way to save her was to seek mercy from Talal's family. Nimisha Priya's mother, Premakumari, travelled to Yemen to meet Talal's family and apologise. Negotiations were held with the family and tribal leaders, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, Talal's family demanded blood money or diya from Nimisha’s family before the 16th of this month to retract the decision. As per reports, the family is demanding Rs 8 crore to give mercy to the Malayali nurse.
Nimisha Priya, married to Thodupuzha native Tommy Thomas, claims that Talal Abdu Mahdi had promised to help her start a clinic while she was working as a nurse. She alleges that he took her passport and subjected her to brutal assault.
