ALAPPUZHA: The goons who tried to kidnap and kill a youth in Kayamkulam have been arrested. Chintu, Amal and Anoop Shankar, natives of Krishnapuram, were arrested. The accused abducted a young man named Arun Prasad and tried to kill him.
They attempted to kill the young man at the railway crossing. There was a clash between the goons and the police at a hotel on Friday night. The police, who were in civilian clothes, saw one of the gangsters smoking a cigarette and questioned him.
The gang argued with the police, not realizing who they were. This led to a confrontation at Kaiyangali. One of the goons was taken to the station. During the scuffle, one of the group's phones fell out of his pocket. Arun Prasad found the phone and handed it over to the police. Reports say this is the reason for the enmity.
Earlier, footage of the accused attacking the youth at the railway crossing with sticks and swords had surfaced. The goons themselves captured the footage on their mobile phones.
Meanwhile, many people have been arrested, including those from Alappuzha, as part of Operation AAG Special Drive conducted by the state-wide police to crack down on gangsters. Adarsh (Murugan, 22) was arrested by the Trikunnapuzha police at Karuvata Kannalipalam Adarsh Bhavan the other day. Adarsh, the accused in the case, had been absconding and was wanted by the Poojappura, Haripad and Thrikunnapuzha stations. The accused was arrested by a team consisting of SI Shivdas Menon, CPOs Rahul R. Kurup, Rajesh, Jaganath, and Visakh under the leadership of Trikunnapuzha Inspector Sivaprakash.
