KANNUR: A court has remanded a youth and his mother in an incident where the youth's wife committed suicide. The deceased is Delna (23), the daughter of Kannur Chanokkundu native Binoy. Delna's husband Sanoop Antony (24) and his mother Soly Antony (47) were remanded by the court for two weeks.

Delna and Sanoop got married four months ago. Both Sanoop and Soly used to mentally torture Delna demanding 80 sovereigns of gold as dowry. Unable to bear the torture, Delna left her husband's home and went to her home.

Delna attempted suicide at her house one and a half months ago. She was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode and later to Kannur Medical College. She died on Saturday while undergoing treatment.

Earlier, Delna's family had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Delna was mentally tortured in the name of dowry and that her husband's family was responsible for her suicide attempt. The Kunnamangalam Magistrate also recorded Delna's statement while she was undergoing treatment. The police then registered a case against Sanoop and Soly and released them on bail. Following Delna's death, Sanoop and Soly were arrested on charges of dowry harassment and domestic abuse as per the instructions of DySP Pramod.
