ERODE: A temple priest died after drinking goat's blood during animal sacrifice as part of a festival in a temple at Kulapallur Chettipalayam in Tamil Nadu's Gopichettipalayam. The deceased Palani Sami (51), one of the 10 priests of this temple, has been working as a priest for 25 years. He also works as a van driver in his spare time.

Traditionally, Palani Sami's family conducts the puja at the Chettipalayam temple. As part of the festival, devotees brought 20 goats for offerings on Wednesday. Priests eating a mixture of the sacrificed goat with banana is one of the important customs in the temple.

This ceremony was performed by Palani Sami. After having the mixture, Palani Sami felt uncomfortable and the temple authorities rushed him to the Gopichettipalayam government hospital, but his life could not be saved. The police informed that the cause of death would be known only after receiving the post-mortem report.

Animal sacrifice is a main ritual in most temples in Tamil Nadu. People sacrifice goats in temples during festivals and for children's ear-piercing ceremonies.
