NEW DELHI: Counting of votes for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim assembly elections will be held today. Elections to the 60-member Arunachal and 32-member Sikkim Assemblies were held on April 19. After announcing the counting of votes on June 4 along with the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission changed the dates in both the places.
In Arunachal, the ruling BJP and the Congress are clashing. Chief Minister Pema Khandu (Mukto), Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein (Chowkham) and BJP candidates from Bomdila, Hayuliang, Itanagar, Roing, Sagalee, Tali, Taliha and Ziro-Hapoli seats have won unopposed.
In Sikkim, the main contest is between regional parties Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). BJP and Congress are on the front lines. Current Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (SKM), former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling (SDF) and former footballer Bhaichung Bhutia (SDF) are prominent candidates.
In 2019, BJP came to power in Arunachal with 41 seats. Congress got four, JDU seven and NPP won five. In the 2019 Sikkim elections, SKM came to power with 17 seats. SDF won only 15. 31 seats are required for a majority in Arunachal and 17 seats are needed in Sikkim.
