THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSEB is concerned about the lack of water in the state's dams despite the rainy season. The estimate was that during the rainy season electricity consumption would decrease and the dams would fill up. Expecting this, no contracts to purchase electricity for the months of June and July were made. But now the board fear that they have erred in their calculations.
The maximum water level in the dams in the state will be lowered before the onset of monsoon following the flood threat and rule curve conditions of the Central Water Commission. But even after a month since the rains started, the water did not reach the dams. So far the state has 25 percent water. There is 29 percent water in Idukki dams. 8% in Sholayar, 13% in Kundala, 18% in Pampa, 2% in Anayirangal and 13% in Ponmudi. All the dams in the state have water to generate electricity a total of 1018 million units. There was water to generate 1240 million units of water in 2022 and 1860 million units in 2021. Last year the water level was low due to drought.
It was estimated that the state will get water to generate 647.63 million units electricity this month. But it got only 330.07 million units of water. 632 million worth of water was received last year. Meanwhile, there is no significant reduction in electricity consumption in the state. The consumption on June 22 was 81.18 million units. KSEB is of the position that if the rains do not intensify in the coming days, they will have to look for alternative ways.
