Ensuring a grand Onam celebration amidst financial constraints

onam

There is a saying that no matter what is sold, Onam should be celebrated grandly. No hardship or stinginess should dampen the brightness of the celebrations. Onam is a great festival for all Keralites, a time of joy transcending religious beliefs and the credibility of legends. With the celebration just two months away, the state government has decided to take a loan of Rs 1,500 crore to pay an installment of social security pension arrears, in addition to salaries and pensions.

Onam brings many additional financial burdens on the exchequer, including salary advances, social security pension arrears, Supplyco’s Onam markets, and Onam week celebrations. It is also a festive season for traders, often marked by price hikes. To ensure the common man can afford essentials like vegetables and spices, the Civil Supplies Department must intervene effectively. For this to happen, the government must clear arrears owed to the public supply department, which amount to Rs 3,500 crores owed to SupplyCo by both the Center and the State.

These financial concerns made headlines in 'Kerala Kaumudi' recently, prompting the Opposition to raise the issue in the House. However, Finance Minister KN Balagopal has assured that special attention will be given to SupplyCo. Last year, the Food and Public Supplies Department struggled as contractors were unwilling to supply the necessary goods for Onam markets, resulting in half the districts facing shortages. This embarrassing situation should not be repeated. Immediate payment of at least part of the arrears is crucial, and by early September, crores must be distributed, covering government employees' salaries and pensions.

Unnecessary and costly celebrations or lavish events planned for July and August should be postponed. In connection with the Onam celebrations, measures should be taken to reduce waste. Just as families tighten their budgets and cut back on non-essential items, the finance department should adopt similar precautionary measures for Onam. With careful planning and prudent management, Onam can be celebrated without breaking the bank. It is time to start this mental calculation now, ensuring that the grandeur of Onam is preserved without compromising financial stability. Otherwise, even if assets are sold, the desired outcome will not be achieved!
