NEW DELHI: In a major addition to India's arsenal, a light battle tank developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector firm Larsen and Toubro (L&T), Zorawar, was successfully tested at Hazira in Gujarat. Zorawar will be handed over to the Army in April for further testing. Zorawar will be deployed in the army in 2027 after completing all the trials. The main objective is to counter the threat of light mountain tanks deployed by China across the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
Due to its lighter weight, it is faster than T-72 and T-90 tanks and can be used in mountains, deserts and steep climbs.
The tank was designed and the first prototype was built in just two and a half years. 354 tanks will be built.
The tank is named after Zorawar Singh, a Dogra general who conducted military operations in Ladakh in the 19th century.
